Recreating Myths and Legends Jason

Some people hold the belief that the Gods of ancient Greek Mythology were infact travellers from the distant stars, whose great powers were actually the result of advanced technology. The Far Space: Olympus series aims to recreate these stories in an advanced science fiction alternate universe. There are people known as Gods, but they have now mystical powers, they are just normal people in positions of power, the ruling classes so to say; for instance, in our universe, Zeus is the Emporer of his Domain, in the same way that Ming the Merciless was in control in the Flash Gordon movies.

As you can probably imagine, there a vast amount of myths and legends linked to religion of ancient Greece - Greek Mythology. It's our aim at RPG Nation to recreate every story into our science fiction universe, and whilst these tales will follow the legends as close as possible, adaptations are ofcourse needed to suit our setting. There will naturally be some mythology purests who think any changing of the tale is a form of heresy, but remember these are stories without known authors, past down through the ages by word of mouth and then recreated on paper. There are many different stories for the same tale, the Romans were so impressed with the ancient Greek religion that they adopted many aspects of it as thier own. To see what we are changing it may be helpful that you understand the different between myths and legends. Myths represent the stories linked to the religions and the gods. Legends are related to mortal men who become heros or villians.

Recreating these tales has required a lot of research, and as a result great influences have been gained from books and popular culture. Many of you may have seen the television show Battlestar Galactica; whos characters including Apollo and Helios are named after Greek Gods, the planets from their twelve colonies represent the signs of the Zodiac (i.e Caprica Sagitaris) also present in ancient Greece. This setting slightly gives a feel of how Far Space: Olympus could be seen. Ofcourse, this is still small scale to what we are seeking to achieve. Fewer of you will remeber the French cartoon Ulysses 31. A cult classic science fiction series featuring the Gods of Olympus and a starship Captain called Ulyssess in an epic recreation of Homer's tale of Ulyssess, the Odyssey and his voyage home. It is these such things which have greatly influenced our designs, and we truely hope you enjoy your adventures in our worlds as much as we enjoyed creating them.
